- Before entering Parliament worked as a policy and research officer at Nalgo/UNISON (1977 - 1994). Lecturer at St Albans College of Further Education (1971 - 1973).
- MP for Luton North since 1997. Secretary of the All-Party Parliamentary Jazz Appreciation Group. Parliamentary Candidate for Luton North in 1983. Councillor on Luton Borough Council (1972 - 1976).
- Member of GMB. Delegate on Luton Trades Union Council.
- Governor of Luton Sixth Form College (1993 - present). Honorary Fellow at the University of Luton.
- Leisure interests include music.

- MP for Luton since 1997. Member, Information Select Committee. Former PPS to to Baroness Morgan, Mo Mowlam MP and Gavin Strang MP. Former member of the Northern Ireland Select Committee and Public Adminstration Select Committee.
- Member of Labour Party National Policy Forum.
- Set up and chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Domestic Violence and the PLP Housing Group. Chair of the PLP Parliamentary Affairs Committee. Secretary of the PLP Northern Ireland Committee. Founded Labour's E-futures Group.
- Recipient of Government Computing Information Age Innovator of the Year Award. Sponsored Protection of Children Act. Set up Womenspeak, linking MPs with survivors of domestic violence. Contributed to legislative changes on domestic violence.
